My Cavalier is about 32lbs. He's huge! But the vet said he's not overweight at all; built perfect, he's just a big one. My Cavalier though is from the "older style" with a bit longer of a muzzle and larger in sizer. He's a big guy, but I love 'em!

I am amazed that there can be such a diff in the cavs sizes. I have two, one is 11 lbs. and fits all of the akc standards. My other is full grown now at 27 lbs. Why so many differences in sizes?

She's Home

Shasta is home. I picked her up yesterday and she is so scared. She is 11 months old and has been crated her entire life at a puppy mill. Poor baby. She sleep with my son and the other two cavs last night.

Getting a new bleinheim girl from Lucky Star Rescue!

I am adding a third baby to our family. I am getting a beautiful bleinheim girl from Lucky Star Rescue. She is very timid and I am told afraid of almost everything. Hopefully, my other two and a lot of loving care will bring her out of her shell.
Her name is Shasta! I will put her pic on my page.

Karen,
Your have such a wonderful, huge, heart! So fuonny you felt that way after you got the puppy, If elt the same way
once. Too bad we can't save them all. Even worse, are that there are people out there breeding dogs without any concern for their welfare. There are some reputable, caring breeders out there. Lucy, my oldest cav, was one of those that "did not fit the standard", and could not be sold. I still paid a good bit for her $750.00 but, her future was questionable also. I just couldn't see anything happen to her.

Part 2- ha ha

Well, about 2 weeks went by and the fellow I knew called my business. Asked if I wanted that pup. That the guy with the litter had sold all the females and was putting an end to this pup because he hadnt sold and was getting older. Guess these particular individuals have a reputation for shooting or gassing what they dont want. And that was what was going to happen. WELL!!! I was off and running across Indiana in a thunderstorm of driving rain to meet them in some restraunt parking lot 2 hours away. Got there, grabbed the dog in the driving rain, he handed me some papers, I put the dog in my SUV, wrapped him in a big comforter, his tail was wagging like crazy, he was so happy. He didnt try to stand up or move around. He just immediately went to sleep and slept all the way home. I felt like some undercover agent or crazy drug dealer. It was not typical, thats for sure, That was 2 years ago. He is one of the best dogs I have ever had. So smart, you usually only have to tell him a new thing once or twice and he has it down.

Thats my last rescue story. ha And I feel like Im getting to old for all the drama. ha Thanks for listening to my novel. Somehow, I just needed to get it out. My day will be better.

Karen

The paper the guy handed me was his signed registration. I looked into his pedigree. His sire has "TEN" Field Championships....can you believe that!!! I was stunned. That was my last rescue. It even exhausts me to talk about it now...ha

Hi Jan,

Yes, I can identify with the concern of not knowing the parents health background. I do not know Luna's either and that pops into my mind from time to time. I try not to get too concerned and hope for the best.

I was reading about the adventures of the Lucky Star rescue at the dog auctions. How painful to think about...let alone be there and witness. I didnt even know there were such things as "dog" auctions. Now that I am aware of it, I guess Ohio and Missouri are a couple of the bigger states for doing such things. Wish there was a way to shut that down. Guess we need to be happy they are finally cracking down on the puppy mills.

Not far from here, in the months May to Sept. there is a place that, the first Sat. of every month, has what they call an Exotic Animal Sale. It is just a huge open field where people come with their animals and set up cages or pens and sell their animals. Its just row after row to walk up and down. Everything from snakes and spiders to mini donkeys, skunks, geese, birds, but LOTS of dogs and puppies. Very heart breaking for the dogs. I have went upon occasion to see if there was something that was TERRIBLY in need of saving. Most are "deciently" taken care of , but upon occasion, there is something I cant stand. That is how I got my English Setter. He was a beauty, in a small wire pen with about 4 of his sisters. They were 2/3rds grown and starving for attention. A ( certain type of person with a differnt type of lifestyle, that I probably shouldnt point out by name on the web, but usually deal in dogs) man had them there to sell. As I was standing there loving on this young male setter, A fellow walked up that I knew threw a business that I have and said I could probably get the dog pretty cheap, cause he knew this guy. I will write this story in 2 parts...cause I dont know much about how blogs and forums work, and since I am limited on space. Im kind of a computer dummy...can you tell? ha Karen

Oh my gosh!!! Im so sorry to hear and what a terrible thing for you to go through! Im so glad you have a new addition and all is going well. What has your experience been like once you've done the paperwork for adoption? Do you have a long waiting period? Did you request a puppy? I have been considering fostering....just wanting to do something for the greater good. Having been a dog owner my entire life, I am thinking I could help an unfortunate and/or mistreated Cav find a loving home. One of my greatest concerns is ME falling in love and not wanting to give up the dog. That might be a tough one.

Hello - Jan, I noticed that you are from Belle Chasse. I am from Metairie. I have two Cav's, Emma and Spencer - I adore them. Shasta is so adorable but, it is beyond imagination that A Cavalier would wind up as a rescue! They are so sweet and loving! Good luck - and as I am sure you probably already know, they are such good company for each other - hopefully Shasta will be brought out of her shell by your other two Cavs.
