Cavs are such a joy to own. My son and I bred labs-only 3 times--had success and enjoyed the process. I have no plans at this time to become a full fledged breeder. I will breed once for sure but only 3 at the most. I will wait to see how the first litter goes. I am considering getting my female certified in hips and eyes, but she is not yet 2 yrs. old (1yr. 9mths) My vet and I have discussed it. I have some decisions to make. There is a lot to it. I do plan to get a breeders liscense. Our city requires it if you have 5 or more dogs. I already have 3--if I keep one or one happens to not be "adopted"--well I may have 5 before you know it. Our lab loves the 2 Cavs. -Sadie is getting up in yrs. and needed some company! They all do well together. All are spoiled too!
I am interested in agility a bit! Beau shows a sort of natural talent for it! He's the jumper, runner, daredevil in the group. I don't know of any groups here in town. None advertised at least.
Our Cavs may not be show material, but they do have good health and a lot of love to go around. I am very particular as to who becomes parents of one of my pups---just as i was when we had the labs. We bred for hunting stock---got it---and had successful adoptions! One pick of the litter even won a state field trial championship! We keep in touch with most of of our adoptive families. Now that my children are out of college, married with children and living on their own, well, I chose the Cavalier to be my next canine adventure. Something I can do myself--labs are big, and hard to travel with 2 or 3! Ours travel with us, live with us, sleep with us! I see how people can have 3 or more!
How did you get into rescue? That is something I might like to do also---or foster one for a while to help out. Cavs are sort of new to Louisiana. But they are catching on.
Again Kitty, thank you for all of the info. Thank you more for sharing some of the many things you have learned. I'm sure some were heartfelt as some of ours were. Our worst and most hectic, but best litter came out of our first when the mom lab contracted mastitis! We hand fed, round the clock, used pacifiers, the works! It was work, scary, but absolutely the best litter of labs! All were so loving! We had a repeat buyer just for the attitude! I appreciate your concern. I know all breeds have different issues, but we are so looking forward to our Cavs. They are great with our grandkids! So anything I can learn or do with the breed will be of help. I am grateful for this website and nice people like you that share! Thanks again, I will wait to hear from you. --Sincerely, Lisa
