We found ultrasounds a good guide but have changed to late term x-rays for more accuracy. With ultrasound done mid term it leaves a lot of time for the mother to absorb a puppy. Of course this can even happen with x-rays. This Monday the x-ray showed 7 puppies, Tuesday 6 puppies were delivered and a followup exam at the vet showed no sign of #7!
Good luck on this litter. All of our litters have been small (1-3) until our latest bitch. We only breed when we are looking to add to our own line and keep anything with potential. Makes for a full house but hay, they are Cavaliers, never too many :)

Hi-

I have had 5 litters over the last 7 years and ultrasounded each litter. 3 were exactly right. On one litter they saw 4 and she had 6 and on one they saw 6 and she had 7. On the others they saw 4, 5 and 6 and were exactly right!

Puppies are exciting, lots of hard work and lots of heartwarming moments.
