I just got this from Jo Ann W. about Canidae. Before posting I called the MA hospital to verify, Dr Conley was out of town but the tech on duty verified that this is a real case and real patient. Here is the warning.

Just to let everyone know. We recently had a whole family of dogs (4) become very ill on this food.
One dog died, one was hospitalized for supportive care and two others were treated as out patients.
They presented with green diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and collapse .
Necropsy samples were sent out and there is high suspicion of botulism toxicity. Other possibilities
include Salmonella and virulent E. coli. We await further results and I will keep you posted. The
media has been alerted.
There are also other lawsuits pending against Canidae. I recommend using well known, long
established dog food companies as they usually have protocols to prevent food contamination/ poisoning.
Also make sure all components of the food are from the USA, not China or Mexico as their quality
standards are much lower than ours. New and natural are not always better!!
Stick to the stuff you know.

Good Morning,

After reading this posting I continued to do addtional research on the web about Canidae, as that is what my 2 cavs were fed. I found a great deal of information indicating there were problems. I ended up e-mailing the breeder I got my dogs from, as she has always used Canidae. She too had problems in December, 2008 when she bought food. About 4 of her dogs became ill. Fortunately there have been no adverse effects. She has changed foods and all her dogs are now fine.

She told me that 9 months ago the company was sold (around July, 2008) and at that time the forumla's changed. The food she had prior to December were all made with the previous formula. The new bags of food were the new formula.

I have changed my food. My dogs didn't appear to have problems, but I was not willing to take the continued risk. I also do not feel right supporting a company that will not stand behind their products or the safety of their product.

I have had issues with my two with touchy stomachs, digestive problems and loose bowel movements. I suspected it might be food related and tried a variety of premium food products including some prescription foods from my vet. I also got concerned about tainted foods and began looking for a high quality food that doesn't use foreign ingredients.

I found Altemis Holistic Pet foods made in California from whole, natural foods in a variety of formuas designed for different size dogs, stage of life and for various health related issues. My two have had very touchy tummies and tend to gain weight. I tried them on a combination of Artemis Beef Canned and Artemis Fresh Mix Weight Management dry kibble about a six months ago. Touchy stomachs are a thing of the past as are unpleasant bowel movements and their weight is under control without having to cut way back on their food quantity. For my money, the health of my dogs and peace of mind I highly recommend Artemis all natural products. I buy mine online at http://weluvurpet.net/dogfood.aspx
It is good to hear there is a company using only US ingredients. Thanks for the tip.
My cavs had loose stools.. I tried a variety of premium dog foods... especially ones that were grain (wheat and corn) free... still issues with loose stools and eye and ear drainage...then eliminated chicken also.. Eureka... problem solved.  They were having issues with chicken which is in most dog foods.  As long as the food is grain and chicken free, my Cavs have perfect stools and no eye/ear drainage.  My Cavs love the HPP and the Royal Canin mixed.  I also add salmon oil every other day.. Their coats look fantastic.
