I am having a problem with Emma. She is 2 years old and still will have poop accidents in the house. Never urinating. She will go for weeks without an accident and then for no apparent reason, she starts to poop in the house. We are ususally home when this happens and have just let her out. We come downstairs and there is poop pile in the dining room. She never barked or even tried to let you know she needed to go out. Any suggestions? Thanks

I am not a trainer or expert. My first thought is this is not a potty training issue but an alpha dog issue. Your words “when we come down stairs” is what makes be feel this. Does she poop only when left behind? If so it may be “I will get even” poop. We had a girl that would pee whenever she was left alone in a room, even just after coming in from outside! We finally found we needed to create her for even the few minutes we had to go somewhere she could not come.

Actually she has the run of the house. We could be in the kitchen and she will go in another room and do her business. So it is not that she is being left behind. I am stumped!

How strange, Cavaliers are so clean and usually very easy to train and want to be good. Hopefully we will collect some other ideas from the members and can solve this for you.

I have the same problem with my Ty who is 18 months and out of the blue will poop in the house. He is really sensitive to change and anxious when I leave, but not sure if this is the cause. Wish I had some good suggestions for you, but I can identify!

We are having the EXACT same issue. Our cavalier is 8 months old and is perfectly potty trained except for the rare occasion that he will decide that he wants to poop in my sons room. He will be with us, playing, perfectly happy and then I will realize.. Sammy's gone! I will go upstairs to find him pooping on the floor. Its super upsetting and I am trying to find any help how to solve this issue. He is a great dog otherwise and my family loves him. We have 4 children and he gets a TON of attention. Help??

So am I my dog Cooper is 1 years old now and He is like that to. See we have another dog a Maltese named Toby and he is 4 years old. But I have noticed that Cooper is trying his best to not poop in the home but sometimes he dose.

Hi, again, same issue here! My Bridget does fine for months and then out of the blue, same thing, where's bridget.. find her in our kids room or if their door is shut in the hallway either pooping or already has. We have to keep our finished basement gated off at the top of the stairs cause she will go down there to poop. so i will have to keep checking this thread to see if we can get any help!

I have had a similar problem w/ our Beau-7 mths old. Perfect for days, then poop where he feels like it. My vet has stated that we must try to keep "potty training" just that--training. When we go outside to potty, do just that and return inside to cuddle, play, etc. Outside is for potty, Inside for play. Not to confuse the dog by playing outside and inside. Always come right back inside after pee and poo! Then wait a few minutes, get a toy, then go play outside. Help the dog know the difference- outside potty---inside other things. Crateing does help for short times left alone. But still, outside immediately, do BOTH jobs, then inside, maybe treat, play, love and kisses----wait a few---then say, Let's go outside to play--wanna go play?I have noticed an improvement. Beau is almost going 100% when I say "potty, Beau, potty. Bringing to the same area does help. But we have 3 dogs total, so there is always a distraction.

Since we started doing exactly what the vet said, as I commented earlier, Beau is doing 100% better! I don't care to crate them, but it has helped. From anything from 2 min. to 2 hrs., while grocery shopping say-but he knows outside is to potty, when told to "potty" he knows what that is. I do not leave food out, only water--feeding time is 2x's daily--and we try to make that the same time everyday, even on weekends---20 min. later, go potty. Scheduled feedings make a big difference too-if food is left always, they snack always-more food, more poop! I think all Cavs have a bit of a separation issue, because they are so loving and devoted. And sometimes it is hard to have patience. Beau now knows that yes, we are coming back--They are very smart dogs! I may even crate him while I'm in the kitchen cooking---only for a few minutes, then out he comes to a treat. He responds to "kennel up"-he no longer runs and hides, or cowers--.My vet swears it will work no matter what the age. He raises labs. I trust him. As they say, teach an owner to teach the dog!LOL! I hope things will improve for you. I know how aggravating that can be. Stay strong and try other things. Something is bound to work! Good Luck! Remember how smart Cavs are!
